Poreč is a small town with long history, located on the west coast of Istria, between river Mirna on the north and town Vrsar on the south. Besides Rovinj, which is located further to the south, Poreč is the largest town in Istrian county, one of the 21 counties in Croatia. Town area is 142 km2, and Poreč has about 12 000 residents. Other larger settlements in the area are Tar, Vabriga, Baderna, Žbandaj, Nova Vas, Fuškulin, Dračevac, Varvari i Červar-Porat.

The town's population of approximately 12,000 resides mostly on the outskirts, while the wider Poreč - Parenzo area has a population of approximately 17,000 inhabitants. The municipal area covers 142 km², with the 37 km long shoreline stretching from the Quieto river - Mirna River near Novigrad - Cittanova to Funtana - Fontana and Vrsar - Orsera in the south.

The basilica, atrium, baptistery and episcopal palace are outstanding examples of religious architecture, while the basilica itself combines classical and Byzantine elements in an exceptional manner. Justification for Inscription The Committee decided to inscribe this property on the basis of criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv), considering that the Episcopal complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in the historic centre of Porec is an outstanding example of an early Christian episcopal ensemble that is exceptional by virtue of its completeness and its unique Basilican cathedral.
